When You Lose At Love

Welcome back my friend
I can see where you’ve been
Out getting wounded by love again
You opened your heart
So wide it consumed you
Love, played you like a punk
Love was just passing through

When you lose at love there’s this funny little club
You find you belong to but want no part of

That thousand yard stare
Looking for what isn’t there
Looking to feel that way again, anything to not feel this way
She left me for the coast
She found someone new
But California could not hold her and neither could you

When you lose at love there is this funny little club
You find you belong to and want no part of

My love sick friend, I’ve been where you’ve been
Don’t make such a big deal about it
Life goes on with or without it
In time all hearts mend
You’ll ante up your heart again

Wasted Time

You believe what you want to baby
But you break me up
When you say you’ll save me
Your talk sounds cheaper daily
Imperious and proud and empty

You’re just wasted words
And waste time
Decorating that grave of mine

You preach doom all day
But the day rolls by
Like a lonely cloud
In a clear blue sky
That disappears and leaves you dry
No evidence and no alibi

For all your wasted words
And wasted time
Decorating that grave of mine

Antagonists control the wind
From the Holy Land
To the Vatican
From Faith to Faith,
From sin to sin
In a game no one can win

You’re just wasted words
And wasted time,
Decorating that grave of mine

I’m a big bang baby,
I’m born again
Life is too short
To play pretend
Let the devil make
Room for one more
When he sees the things
You use god for
When I pray
I pray you get to heaven
And they say
“No way go back try again”

Every penny you take
From the poor
Every kid you take
Behind closed doors
A suicide a holy war
Blame the freaks
And the gays and the poor
All the things
You use god for
All the things
You use god for

In all of your wasted time
Decorating that grave of mine

And when I pray
I pray you get to heaven
And they say,
“No way go back and try again”

Trampled Heart

Anyone can play the fool
Only love could be this cruel
You made me think our love was true
Fool me one time shame on you
Heaven came and heaven went
Still I could have been content

As just another trampled heart
But the way you come back
To love me again
Just another trampled heart
Then you take it all back and say
Let’s just stay friends
Then you run back to him again

I dwell on the past to pass the time
Before you left me numb and blind
Now you say you’ve come to your senses
Like a siren song to my defenses
Fool me two times, shame on me
I should have cut loose
Turned and run free

As just another trampled heart
If I were able in someway
To summon my will
Just another trampled heart
Make me forget my pain
And make time stand still
While you’re setting me up
For the kill again

It could have been just,
If you would have been just……

Each time he sends you away
You tell me that
You’re back to stay

With this trampled heart
The way you get back
Inside my head
Just another trampled heart
The way you raise me
Up from the dead
Set me up
For the kill again
Just another trampled heart
The way that you say
You could love me again
Just another trampled heart
Then you take it all back and say
Let’s just stay friends
But, baby we were never friends
Just another trampled heart
You leave and then come back
And then walk out again
Just another trampled heart
You’re saying goodbye
As if this is the end
So, until we meet again
When, when?
When you’re just another
Trampled heart

Tonight

The sun should have
Been up by now
But I still can’t sleep
I’ve been up counting
Mountain ranges
Covered in lost sheep
I’ve been up trying
Not to think about
Everything we’ve lost
Dollars and Democracy
Star-crossed
This land belongs
To giants now
That, dwarf the Philistine
That rock you’ve got is about
As much use as a protest sign

Tonight more than days before
We need your human touch
‘Cause other than to each other
We don’t count for much

Mother Nature she ties tough knots
When you try to hold her down
The sulfur sky is falling
The rainbows are grey and brown
Liberty put down her torch
For to thumb a ride
And Justice can’t hold on no more
She’s fallen to one side

Tonight more than days before
We need your human touch
Accounting crunched the numbers
And we cost too much

They blamed Tricky Dick
They blamed Trickle Down
The Texans, the Farmer
And Slick Bill
But say nothing of the fat cows
Still grazing on the hill
That’s business as usual
And it’s no surprise to me
I was born long after
It was still cool to believe
Perhaps I’m even lucky
I’m not stuck with some memory
Of what hope felt like
Before November 1963

Through the Wind

You can search the whole world over
Or try to start the new world order
You can fall to your knees for a dollar
But, I’m pretty sure it ain’t worth the bother
And the sun breathes through the wind

You can try to fill what’s missing
By lining up a few religions
Put them in a big competition
Print up tickets and charge admission

But the wisest words I never get sick of
Love is all you need is love
So find what you’ve got then be a giver
Let them keep that bag of silver

And the sun breathes through the wind
And my world feels whole again
May our little kingdom have no end
I’m back in the arms of my love and my friend

You can feed me to the lions cause
I won’t live by your weird myths and laws
Some people want to start a riot
When they push their god and you don’t buy it
And the sun breathes through the wind

But when my days are over and done
Whether or not there’s a heaven
I’m gunna know I tried to give you
Something simple, heartfelt and true

And if someday you’re filled with sorrow
This melody you can borrow
Take it with you and lend it freely
May it help you like it helped me
